Boko Haram Kills Scores, Burns 540 Houses In Michika

A fleeing resident of Watu Village who simply identify himself as Zira said the insurgents struck the area in the early hours of yesterday before most of the residents woke up from sleep. He said most of the residents were trapped in their homes as the insurgents started shooting and putting off explosives which led to the destruction of many houses including lives.
According to him, the insurgents had a free day as they continued their rampage, maiming and killing residents with impunity without resistance.
He said, “The insurgents took complete control of our village as security operatives were nowhere to be found which made the case even more pathetic as the insurgents continue to kill and destroy properties with reckless abandon.”
Another resident of the area Mallam Abu, said he escaped death by the whiskers and ran into the nearby bush where he was hiding adding that his escape was rather miraculous as he was awake when the insurgents staged their attack, which enabled him to escape adding that other residents that are not so lucky might have been killed.
Abu said, “Since the insurgents struck, I could not see any of my relatives with whom we are staying,

I am not party to $9.3m deal-Oritsejafor

Pastor OritsejaforThe President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, ( CAN) Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor has said he knew nothing about the controversial $9.3m smuggled into South Africa by two Nigerians and an Israeli, using his private jet.
Oritsejafor broke his silence during the National Executive Council meeting of CAN on Monday at the National Christian Centre, Abuja.
The CAN leader said there had been attempts in the media to link him with the incident by mischievous elements, adding that he had kept quiet all the while, because he needed to explain his position to the church which is his primary constituency.
Oritsekafor, in his address declared that he was never a party to the movement of the $9.3m from Nigeria to South Africa to purchase arms and ammunition.
“I want to assure you that I will not do anything to tarnish the image of Jesus Christ or compromise the divine standard of the church.

Fed Govt to rehabilitate surrendered Boko Haram members

Boko-Haram-suspects
The Federal Government has said it will soon begin the process of rehabilitating and re-radicalising Boko Haram members, who have surrendered their arms and weapons in the last one week.
Coordinator of the National Information Centre Mr. Mike Omeri, who briefed reporters in Abuja yesterday, said religious leaders, the school system as well as residents of the area where the surrendered insurgents were being detained, would assist in the rehabilitation.
The military said 135 Boko Haram members surrendered their weapons in Biu, Borno State, on Tuesday, while 133 others surrendered elsewhere in the Northeast.
Omeri added that any member of the sect  apprehended without surrendering his weapons and arms would be brought to justice.
He said the armed forces on ground in the Northeast and most especially in the troubled zone had discovered a winning strategy and would not rest until peace and security were restored.
Omeri urged Nigerians to remain steadfast in their support to ensure that terrorism ended.
He said: “Efforts are ongoing to rehabilitate and re-radicalise the Boko Haram members, who have surrendered their arms in the last one week. Religious leaders, indigenes and the school system will be involved in the rehabilitation.
“The Federal Government has a zero tolerance for terrorism. The armed forces will remain strong, undaunted and motivated in the performance of their duties.
“Nigerians are advised to support the fight, it will not last forever and I believe it will soon end.”
On the abducted Chibok girl, Omeri said the Federal Government was working towards ensuring the eventual release and rescue of the girls.
“It is a global challenge, which Nigeria will soon overcome. The Federal Government is taking measures to rescue them,” he said.
On the issue of one of the abducted girls, who escaped from the Boko Haram custody, police spokesman Emmanuel Ojukwu said on September 24 about 5pm, a girl was seen at Mararaba, Mubi in Adamawa State wandering. He said she was picked up and upon interrogation, it was discovered that she was one of the abducted Chibok girls, who escaped.

“She is undergoing medical treatment after which she will re-unite with her family,” Ojukwu added.

Military pronounces Abubakar Shekau impostor dead

Chief of Defence Staff Air Chief Marshal Alex BadehIs Abubakar Shekau, the eccentric Boko Haram leader, dead? Is the war-monger still alive? These were some of the questions hanging on the lips of discerning members of the public yesterday when the military said the face of Boko Haram on video was dead.
The Cameroonian military seemed to have stirred the hornet’s nest when it announced few days ago that it had killed Shekau. In a rare public show by the Cameroonian Armee Camerounaise (Cameroonian Army), photos of Shekau were made public alongside a statement claiming he was killed during a cross-border raid deep inside Nigeria by its military. Last weekend, it said that Shekau was killed following an aerial bombardment of his hideout inside Nigeria.
But, reacting to the latest news of Shekau’s death, the Nigerian military said it would probe the veracity of the claim. There seemed to be a twist in the tale yesterday when the Nigerian military announced that it killed Mohammed Bashir, who had been an impostor. According to the spokesman for the military, Major General Chris Olukolade, Bashir, who assumed Abubakar Shekau, the name

Abandoned Chibok girl found

Governor Shetttima (sitting right ), Pastor Pona (speaking) and the Chibok girls....yesterday
A girl believed to be one of the 219 Chibok schoolgirls in Boko Haram’s custody for more than 160 days has been found abandoned.
She was picked up at Kwarihi village near Biu in Borno State after being thrown out of a moving Volkswagen Golf car.
She wandered in the bush for two days before she was rescued by villagers.
The Chairman of the Chibok community in Abuja, Hosea Tsambido, recounted this story yesterday.
He spoke at the gathering of the #BringBackOurGirls campaigners on a day Borno State Government announced a scholarship of N1.4million each for 36 girls – among the 57 who escaped on April 15 from abductors.
According to Tsambido, the abandoned girl, who gave her name as Susanna Ishaya, appeared mentally unstable.
He said she had been handed over to one of the Chibok parents who took her to the hospital after which she would be properly questioned.
Tsambido said: “One of the girls was ferried in a Volkswagen golf and thrown into the bush about two days ago and she wandered into the village of Kwarihi, near Mubi.
“From there they called one of the parents to take care of her in Kwarihi. They are taking her to Yola.
“When she was asked, she gave her name as Susanna Ishaya but right now we are not sure if it is her real name until she is really treated because the people that saw her said she is both mentally and phsycally sick and has been taken to the hospital.
“We believe that she was probably abandoned by Boko Haram because of her health.”
The Borno State Government yesterday granted scholarship to 36 of the 57 Chibok school girls who slipped away from  Boko Haram abductors.

Fake Shekau who insulted Jonathan, Obama killed

THE OLD: The original Abubakar Shekau and THE NEW: The fake Abubakar Shekau (Muhammed Bashir)The loquacious man who appeared in many videos taunting President Goodluck Jonathan and his American counterpart Barack Obama is dead, the military announced yesterday.
The clarification by Defence Headquarters (DHQ) spokesman Major-Gen. Chris Olukolade ended the controversy over the fate of the man who the military said assumed “Abubakar Shekau”,  the late “eccentric” leader of the Boko Haram.
Residents of towns where the military fought Boko Haram insurgents confirmed that the man who was known as Bashir Mohammed was, indeed, the one killed, the DHQ said.
The impostor appeared in a video, boasting that the abducted Chibok girls would be sold and married off. He said Jonathan and Obama were embarking on a futile mission, trying to catch him.
Besides, he showed up on television screens claiming responsibility for many Boko Haram bombings.
Gen. Olukolade gave yesterday in Abuja an update on the anti-terrorism battle. He said 135 Boko Haram insurgents surrendered in Yobe and Adamawa states.
He said while 88 gave up in Mairiga/Buni – Yadi, 45 were captured in and around Mubi – Michika in Adamawa State.
All the captives are undergoing interrogation in some designated military facilities.
The DHQ said that many terrorists were killed. They included Mohammed Bashir, who has been

How Abubakar Shekau was killed – Investigation

shekauDetails of how Abubakar Shekau, the impostor and leader of the Boko Haram terrorist group lost his left in a shootout with Nigerian troops in Konduga on Wednesday Sept. 17 emerged yesterday with military sources disclosing that he met his waterloo in an ambush reminiscent of the type the sect had been using to hack down Nigerian troops.

Vanguard gathered that when the first attack on Konduga whereby hundreds of insurgents were taken unawares and killed after over seven hours of fighting and several of their colleagues, arms and ammunition captured, the military commanders strategically urged his captured members to send a message to Shekau that they (insurgents) have routed the troops.
Before the captured insurgents were urged to make the contact and deliver the message, the military commanders had promised them that their cooperation would play a role in the level of punishment to be meted to them after the battle hence they felt reassured.
Also, the captured insurgents had disclosed that Shekau usually moved in a convoy of cars painted in military colours while he sits in a MOWAG Armoured tank with Boko Haram inscription on its front.
When Shekau was contacted, his captured men spoke to him in Arabic, assuring him that they had taken over Konduga, thereby giving him the all clear to proceed from Sambisa Forest. To convince him further, a set of his men captured were told to sing the victory song in Kanuri language they normally sing at the background.
Having convinced himself that the messenger was his chief courier in such situation and the message is authentic, he and his followers made for Konduga, heavily armed with Anti-Aircraft weapons, General Purpose Machine Guns, several AK 47 rifles and other IEDS’.
However, on entering Konduga town, he and his followers were encircled by strategically placed and heavily armed Nigerian soldiers. Immediately he contacted the messenger and discovered that something was amiss, he ordered his followers to start shooting in all direction.
This spurred the Army Commanders to give the directive to open fire. When he discovered that the fire power of the Nigerian Army who used both Infantry and Artillery weaponry was overpowering that of his men, he jumped out of the MOWAG and made to escape.
But eagle-eyed Nigerian Soldiers spotted him and opened fire in him, shattering his legs in the process. It was learnt that he also received bullet wounds in other parts of his body leading to his bleeding to death.

Pro-Fayose Thugs Invade Ekiti Court, Chase Away Judge, Beat Up Litigants

odlums believed to be loyal to the Ekiti State Governor-elect, Ayodele Fayose, on Monday stormed the State High Court, beat up litigants and chased away the trial judge in the case challenging the eligibility of the Governor-elect in the June 21 election.

The case was brought by E-11, a group opposed to the emergence of Mr. Fayose as governor.
Pandemonium started when the trial judge, Justice Olusegun Ogunyemi, ruled earlier in the day that the court  had jurisdiction to hear the matter and subsequently ordered the two parties to prepare for hearing in the case by 1pm.

Why I deserve the NFF Presidency – Umeh

Out-going First Vice President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Chief Mike Umeh has reiterated his claim that he remains the best candidate among those jostling to replace Alhaji Aminu Maigari as NFF President in the forthcoming board elections.
Umeh who is the Anambra State FA Chairman said,  above all other considerations, his record as a football administrator covering over three decades stands him out as a forerunner in the race for the NFF Presidency.
Going back memory lane, Umeh started, “I was team manager of the famous class of 1994 Super Eagles squad that won the Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia and went to the World Cup in USA.
“I am also part of the success story of the Alhaji Aminu Maigari golden era where we are African champions and also world champions in the U-17 category. We surpassed the achievements of all the previous boards.”
The former Rangers International of Enugu boss said his administration would focus on club football administration in the country and ensure players’ welfare takes prominence in the scheme of things. “Our board will ensure we consolidate on the success recorded by the League Management Company and reposition the Nigerian Professional League.
“Clubs must ensure the players who are the key in the administration of the game are well taken care of. Our league must grow and that means we must add value to it in order to attract wider interests,” Umeh said.
He said he would run an open administration where all stake holders would be given their pride of place. “It is a policy we started and I hope to build on. Ex-footballers, coaches and those I consider as elders in the game won’t be left out,” Umeh said.
He pointed out that “being an incumbent Vice President of the best NFF board with the best record, it only sounds logical that I declare myself the best candidate among those gunning for the NFF Presidency because the transition will be smooth and the winning aura will continue when I eventually take over.”

Gabonese Fans Were Shouting “Ebola Nigeria” During Our Match-Eaglets Players

geria' Flying Eaglets football players have recounted the ordeal faced by the team in the ill-fated encounter with their Gabonese counterparts, one that prompted the NFF to report the West African country to the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
Nigeria lost the controversial match 2-1 in Libreville, but faced a very hostile reception by Gabonese fans and football officials due to the recent Ebola outbreak.
Nigeria's Flying Eaglets national teamThe first incident occurred when Nigeria's team of 18 players and six officials were left embarrassed when the airline they boarded informed them that Gabonese authorities had instructed that they be offloaded from the aircraft alongside their luggage, even though CAF had given Nigeria a free pass regarding the virus.

Oritsejafor Has Turned CAN Into A "Sorry Appendage" Of The Federal Government – Senator George Akume

Responding to the recent arms-smuggling scandal which took place in South Africa last week, Senator George Akume, Senate Minority Leader, condemned Pastor Oritsejafor and the Christian Association of Nigeria's handling of the events. A Christian, Akume accuses Oritsejafor in a press release today of championing a "clearly criminal, immoral and unethical act" and attempting to mask it with "religious grandstanding".
"[Oritsejafor's] arguments are unsustainable because he has vicarious liability at several levels," Akume said. "One, the vessel used for criminal activity belongs to him. Secondly, he commercially leased the vessel to Eagle Air, which is a company he holds an interest in and which in turn further leased same to the company that converted it to commercial use with his full knowledge and approval. The chain of ethical liability is unbroken," the senator stated.
Senator George Akume, Minority LeaderAkume also decried CAN's response to the situation, saying the body has become a political entity since the installation of its current leadership.
"Since the present CAN leadership came on board, CAN has become a sorry appendage of the villa. It has become politically partisan, obscenely materialistic and the voice of the oppressor rather than the oppressed. The situation degenerated to a state that

Nigerians Troops Plan Big Push To Recover Territory From Islamist Insurgents

Boosted by recent successes in Konduga and Bazza, commanders of Nigeria’s armed troops in the northeast are drawing up an ambitious tactical plan for a new offensive aimed at recovering territory seized by Islamist insurgents in the last two months.
Tank sighted today in Mubi
Several military sources at Defense Headquarters in Abuja as well as field commanders told SaharaReporters that Nigerian troops have retaken Bazza, a town in Adamawa State earlier seized by militants. An earlier attempt by the army to recapture Bazza was repelled by Boko Haram insurgents. Lieutenant Colonel Adeboye Obasanjo, a son of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, was injured in that earlier battle when insurgents ambushed his platoon.
One army source waxed confident, telling our correspondent that the days of Boko Haram occupying any significant territory in northeast Nigeria were numbered. “We will hit them from the air and from all sides on the ground,” said the officer.
He added that the army had re-absorbed all the soldiers who deserted a few weeks ago into Cameroon. “We decided that the best thing to do was not to punish the soldiers, but to train them more.” He revealed that many of the soldiers had been sent to undergo short training courses at a military facility in Minna, the capital of Niger State.
In addition, all soldiers stationed in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, have received orders to return to their barracks by or before Wednesday this week.
The military’s renewed confidence has also touched civilians in the terror-ravaged northeast. Our correspondent said numerous people who had earlier fled from Mubi in Adamawa State were seen returning to the town yesterday. Among those returning were students who, just a week ago, had left Mubi in droves as Boko Haram fighters seized Michika and seemed determined to push towards Mubi. Some soldiers in Mubi had also briefly fled the city, but returned the next day.
Our correspondent saw five brand new Armored Personnel Carriers (APCs) heading to Vimtrin, the hometown of Air Marshal Alex Badeh, Nigeria’s Chief of Defense Staff.
A security source said that Boko Haram militants had withdrawn from the town of Kawuri and back in Bama as word came to the insurgents that Nigerian troops would begin its massive onslaught soon.

10 more Boko Haram commanders surrender •How Shekau was killed —Military

ANOTHER set of 10 terrorists, on Monday, surrendered to the Nigerian troops at Kawuri, Borno State, with their catche of arms and ammunition.
According to a statement on the Twitter handle of the Defence Headquarters, operations were ongoing in Konduga and its environs.
The tweet also added that there was no raid whatever in any part of Nigeria’s territory in pursuit of terrorists, as claimed in some reports.
Meanwhile, military sources, on Monday, revealed how the Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau, was killed during the battle to regain Konduga, Borno State.
Informed sources disclosed to the Nigerian Tribune that Shekau had mobilised all his commanders to wage war against the Nigerian troops to regain the town.
The source said he had vowed to use Konduga to unleash the attack on Maiduguri, but, while planning his strategy, he did not know that the military was also planning ahead of him.
According to the source, Shekau had mobilised over 600 of his members for the battle with their armoured personnel carrier.
During the battle, the source said Shekau was shot on the legs and could not move, while the soldiers rushed and captured him.
He revealed that the Boko Haram leader was made to use his special signal phone to invite all his members to Konduga, on the premise that the Nigerian troops had been captured.
Unsuspecting members, it was gathered, moved to Konduga, jubilating that their leader and his men had recaptured the town, only for the troops to attack them, killing scores in the process.
During the shoot-out, it was gathered that Shekau made attempt to escape, but was shot dead.
Earlier, the source said Shekau had confirmed to the troops that he was not the original Shekau, and that their leader, the original Shekau, had been killed a year ago.

Ebola could strike 20,000 in six weeks, rumble on for years —Study

THE Ebola outbreak in West Africa could infect 20,000 people as soon as early November unless rigorous infection control measures are implemented, and might "rumble on" for years in a holding pattern, researchers said on Tuesday.
In an article in the New England Journal of Medicine, experts from the World Health Organisation and Imperial College said that infections will continue climbing exponentially unless patients are isolated, contacts traced and communities enlisted.
Reuters reported that the WHO, in an initial roadmap issued on Aug 28, predicted that the virus could strike 20,000 people within the next nine months. The current death toll is at least 2,811 out of 5,864 cases, the U.N. agency says.
The latest study, marking six months from March 23, when the WHO says it was informed of the Ebola outbreak in southeastern Guinea, reflects projections based on the data from a third wave of the virus in Guinea, Sierra Leone and worst-hit Liberia.
"With exponential growth, you'll see that the case numbers per week go up so that by the second of November, over these three countries our best estimate is over 20,000 cases, confirmed and suspected cases," Dr. Christopher Dye, the WHO director of strategy, and co-author of article, told a briefing.
Nearly 10,000 of those would be in Liberia, 5,000 in Sierra Leone and nearly 6,000 in Guinea, he said. But those numbers would only come about with no enhanced infection control.
"Everyone is certainly working very hard to make sure this is a not the reality that we will be seeing," Dye said. "I will be surprised if we hit 20,000 by then," he later added.
U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said last week that under a $1 billion plan, he will create a special mission to combat the disease and deployed staff to the region.
"If control is completely successful in the way that we know it can be, then Ebola will disappear from the human population of West Africa and probably return to its animal reservoir," Dye said, noting that fruit bats were probably the reservoir.
But if control efforts are only partly successful, Ebola viral disease in the human population could become "a permanent feature of life in West Africa", Dye said.
"The alternative possibility that we're talking about is that the epidemic simply rumbles on as it has for the last few months for the next few years, on the order of years, rather than months.
"Under those circumstances, the fear is that Ebola will be more or less a permanent feature of the human population. Of course it could be extinguished later on."
In the three hardest-hit countries there was a "mixed pattern", Dye said.
"We see for example in the border areas of Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia, some areas where there has been no increase in cases for some weeks now. That's true in Sierra Leone, it's true in Lofa in northern Liberia, and it's true in one of the provinces of Guinea.
"So the question that arises is whether we're actually seeing the beginning of a stationary pattern in this epidemic.
In two badly affected districts of Sierra Leone, Kenema and Kailahun, close to border areas with Guinea and Liberia, there has been a stationary pattern, he said.
"What we've seen in the past weeks there, maybe eight, nine, 10 weeks now, is a pattern of incidence, numbers of cases per week, which has not significantly changed.
"And indeed there are signs that it's going down. And I say that cautiously, because we're prepared to be surprised again. That is what I mean by stationary pattern. A steady incidence week on week."
There are other reassuring signs about the efficacy of infection control measures, he said, but whether the disease's spread was stabilizing would become clear in the next few weeks.
No new cases have been recorded in either Nigeria or Senegal in the last three weeks, corresponding to the 21-day incubation period for developing the virulent virus, whose symptoms include fever, vomiting and diarrhoea.
"It is reassuring in many ways that a disease like Ebola can enter a city of 20 million, namely Lagos, and we are able to stop transmission, or rather the people of Nigeria are able to stop transmission," Dye said.
But the Liberian capital Monrovia, where the disease has recently spread fastest, was "uncharted territory", he said.
"Quite honestly if you ask 'can we stamp Ebola out of Liberia?' I'm not sure. In principle we know how to do it, but can we do it on the ground? It remains to be seen."

Shekau, Finally Dead? By PRNigeria

Nigerian troops might have scored a strategic victory in the current battle against terrorists operating in the North East on September 17. During a desperate attempt to capture Konduga in their delusion to eventually marching on and capturing Maiduguri, the man who had been mimicking Late Abubakar Shekau in recent videos might have been finally killed. Abubakar Shekau

According to senior military and intelligence sources, "it is getting more certain that the terrorists' commander who has been mimicking Shekau in those videos is the one killed in Konduga on September 17, 2014."

See Also Former Nigerian Military Dictator Babangida Hospitalized In Germany The PRNigeria sources said the suspected demise of the Boko Haram leader is responsible for the scattering of the sect members in different independent locations in the neighbouring countries, especially in Cameroon noticed in recent days.

The security sources did not deny the suspicion but cautioned that "the process of confirming that the dead body we have is the same as that character who has been posing as Shekau is ongoing. He is definitely a prominent terrorist commander. I don't want to say anything about this yet please."

See Also Some Terrorists Surrender With Weapons In Konduga Another high ranking military source insisted that the resemblance is too striking to be a coincidence. They cited his facial marks, beards and teeth apart from the recovery by the Nigerian troops of some of the Armoured Vehicles and Hilux jeeps that had featured in previous videos of the prime suspect.

The officers assured that the Defence Headquarters will soon address the nation after full investigation of their latest discovery.

Judge flees as thugs disrupt proceedings against Fayose

Victims of the attackThere was confusion on the premises of the Ekiti State High Court on Monday as hoodlums invaded the place to disrupt proceedings in a case challenging the eligibility of the Governor-elect, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, to contest the June 21 governorship election.
However, Fayose has since won the election.
The invasion took place shortly after the judge, Justice Olusegun Ogunyemi, refused an application to set aside an order abridging the time for the Peoples Democratic Party’s candidate to file his defence in the case filed on behalf of socio-political group, Ekiti-11 by a member, Mr. Femi Ajakaiye.
The judge had adjourned sitting till 12 noon to prepare a ruling in a similar matter filed by the Citizen Popular Party before trouble started.
As he was preparing to return for the continuation of the matter, angry youths besieged the court. The judge was smuggled out of the chambers through the back door to avoid being lynched by the aggressors.
Judges, lawyers and others in court, including journalists, ran for their lives as the protesters went berserk and went after perceived opponents of the PDP.
It could not be confirmed if the police made any arrest.
The hoodlums numbering about a hundred were aggrieved about the perceived partiality of the judge handling the case.
In the ensuing melee, the Chairman of Ado West Local Council Development Authority, Mr. Sunday Ibitoye, and Ajakaye, were attacked.
The hoodlums had earlier engaged in an argument with securitry officials in the court room for preventing some of them from entering the court while allowing others in.
The rampaging youths, who called the trial judge all sorts of unprintable names, alleged that he was partial in handling the matter for showing interest beyond official reasons.
The judge, who had assumed jurisdiction in the case had ruled that he could not reverse his decision to abridge the time as the court had become “functus officio” having taken a decision on the issue.
Contrary to the argument by the PDP, the court said the decision to abridge the time did not contravene Section 32 of the 1999 Constitution.
Justice Ogunyemi said the PDP and Fayose failed to prove beyond reasonable doubt the reasons why the court could not hear the substantive suit.
The judge consequently dismissed the PDP’s application, saying the court could not set aside its own ruling of June 6, and that the time frame had been overtaken by events, which he maintained had rendered the whole exercise a mere academic exercise.
Commenting, the Interim Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Jide Awe, said, “We are back to the Idi Amin era in Ekiti where judges and lawyers are attacked in court. This is terrible.
“But the APC has no case in the court and we were not there to witness the attack.”
Also commenting, the PDP Publicity Secretary, Kola Oluwawole, urged Justice Ogunyemi to steer clear of the case alleging that he had connived with the ruling APC.
Accusing the judge of bias, Oluwawole said, “The judge openly demonstrated in his ruling that he has jurisdiction on the matter and simultaneously commenced hearing of the matter without giving the respondent the opportunity to signify an appeal.
“The PDP also condemns the barbaric action of the APC thugs who attacked voters that voluntarily voted for Ayo Fayose in the last governorship election.

Controversy over alleged Shekau’s killing

Director of Defence Information, Maj.-Gen. Chris OlukoladeThe reported killing of a top Boko Haram leader said to be Abubakar Shekau has again ignited a fresh controversy between Nigerian and Cameroonian troops.
The Cameroon Concord had on Monday quoted a military source as having said that Shekau was killed on Saturday by the Cameroonian Army during a cross border aerial bombardment of his hideout in Nigeria.
To prove the killing, the newspaper also published photographs of the bearded man it said was Shekau who usually appears in videos as the leader of Boko Haram.
It made reference to a statement by the Cameroonian military authorities on the killing but was silent on its content.
The paper added in the report that the Cameroon army had   been in serious combat against thousands of Boko Haram fighters trying to enter Cameroon through Fotokol from Gamboru Ngala in Borno State.
But Nigeria’s Defence authorities dismissed the claim that the said Shekau was killed by Cameroonian security forces within Nigeria.
The Director of Defence Information, Maj. Gen. Chris Olukolade, stated that there was no raid on any terrorists’ hideout by Cameroon or any other foreign country within Nigerian soil.
Olukolade explained that the ongoing operations against   insurgents in Kodunga and its neighbouring communities were being undertaken solely by Nigerian forces.
He said, “There was no raid whatsoever by Cameroon or any foreign forces in any part of Nigeria’s territory in pursuit of terrorists as claimed in some reports allegedly quoting Cameroon authorities.
“All operations   in the environs of Kodunga and all associated border locations within the country are completely undertaken by Nigeria troops.”
